Blocking of SMS Content that consist of URL Link, Personal Details, Phone Numbers or Others

  1. What is blocking of URL in SMS?
    The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a directive to all Service Providers:-

    (a) to block sending and receiving of Person to Person (P2P) short messaging service (SMS) with URL link. The said blocking took effect on 2 May 2023.

    (b) to block the sending and receiving of Person to Person (P2P) and Application to Person (A2P) short messaging service (SMS) with URL link, personal details such as Name and NRIC, phone numbers and others which will take effect on 2 July 2023.

    The objective of this block is to prevent users from becoming victims of online scams. This block is applicable for SMS sent to or receive from local and international mobile number.

  2. Does the blocking of SMS apply when I am abroad or while roaming?
    Yes, the blocking of SMS with URL link, personal details, phone numbers and others will take effect even when you are abroad or roaming.
  3. How can I unblock all SMS messages sent to me?
    Currently, there is no option available to unblock SMS messages that have been blocked to prevent consumers from falling to victims’ online scams.
  4. I have important URL to share with my family and friends, what are my options?
    You may still share the link via social apps or instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook messenger and WeChat and etc.

    Please be reminded, for safety purposes, do not click on any links received from unknown senders and to only login to your eWallet, online banking or other e-transactions accounts via the secured official URL and official mobile application directly.  Do not share your online log in credentials such username and password with others.

  5. Does blocking of SMS with URLs, personal details, phone numbers and others eliminate all potential scam messages?
    While blocking of SMS with personal details, URLs, phone numbers and others can greatly reduce scam messages, it does not guarantee complete elimination. Certain scammers may employ tactics to bypass these blocking measures. Please be cautious and always be aware of online security. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or sharing personal information online.
  6. I am a business user and company sends SMS to user via Enterprise SMS, what will happen to that?
    Business/enterprise users can use short codes provided by registered Content Providers to send SMS that contains personal details, URL links and others.
  7. Will I still be receiving SMS via short codes with URL, personal details, and phone numbers?
    Yes, if the short codes are legitimate and sent from Yes or other registered Content Providers.
  8. How do I lodge a report on a suspected scam SMS content that was not blocked?
    If you receive an SMS containing personal details, phone numbers, and URL links from an unknown / suspicious sender that was not blocked, you may submit a report to YesCare at yescare@yes.my.
